Critic Bill Zacharkiw recently noted that “the time for apologizing for Quebec wine is over.” Although winemaking in the province has a long history – Samuel de Champlain planted vines in 1608, and the early French colony made wine from wild grapes as well – it’s only lately that Quebec winemaking has truly come into its own. Choosing varietals that perform well in similar Northern European climates, and learning how best to vinify the grapes, has been key. Today there are over 130 vignerons in the province, some of which consistently sell out as much as they can produce. Eric Blouin and Samantha Rahn lead a guided tasting of wines from top Quebec estates, including those made from hybrids, rustic vines, and viniferas.
